Patchwork Quilting Guidelines

Basic Guidelines
There are no rules - just guidelines; and there will always be exceptions.
Once you understand the guidelines you will also appreciate when it is not absolutely necessary to follow them.
However, if you are entering competitions or working towards City and Guilds qualifications then you will need to adhere to the rules or criteria specified.

Most patchwork instructions are given in inches and most tools are marked in that way, because of the large American market.
If you buy patterns from Europe you may find that the instructions are given in metric.

There are two main guidelines to follow:

  • Seam allowances are usually ¼"
  • Seams are pressed to one side - usually behind the darker fabric
