Patchwork Fabric
Patchwork Quilting Fabric... I suggest that you start working with 100% cotton.
Patchwork fabrics bought from quilting shops will invariably be cotton;
they are heavier weight than dressmaking fabrics, but lighter weight than upholstery fabric.
Patchwork fabrics tend to be printed with fairly small patterns so that the design does not get lost when you cut out small patches.
Don’t be tempted to mix poly-cotton into your cotton quilt. It will slip when piecing, does not hold a crease well and will not shrink by the same amount as the cotton fabrics.
There are plenty of other fabrics you can use as you become more experienced (silk, wool, flannel) but be aware of their behaviour.
Certain more advanced techniques lend themselves well to working with a mix of fabrics and will alleviate the problems.
