Anatomy of a Patchwork Quilt
Traditional Quilt
A Traditional Quilt is made up from a number of blocks. The block designs all have names, some of them have several different names. A Quilt can be made from many different blocks and this is known as a Sampler Quilt. Or a Quilt can be made with all the blocks of the same design. With these quilts you get interesting secondary designs at the points where the blocks join.
In a Sampler Quilt the blocks are usually separated by narrow strips called Sashing. There may be a square of contrasting fabric at the end of each piece of sashing and these are known as cornerstones.
Contemporary Quilt
With a contemporary quilt the design may be an abstract image or a picture made from fabric and can be arranged in any way you like.
Finishing off
Quilt Borders
Most quilts will have one or more borders around the blocks or the centre piece. The border can be used to bring the quilt together visually, using a fabric which ties all the other fabrics together, or simply to make the quilt larger to fit on a particular sized bed. The border can be a single piece of fabric, or may be pieced in a way that complements the quilt design.
Quilt Binding
Once the Quilting is finished, a binding is added all around the outside of the quilt to tidy up the raw edges.
Quilt Label
The final task is to put a label on your Quilt to say who made it, when it was made, and who it was made for.
