Quilting Techniques

The main purpose of quilting is to hold the three layers of the quilt together. Quilting can be done by hand or by machine. Machine Quilting is best done with a ‘Walking Foot’ which help to feed the multiples layers of fabric evenly through the machine.

Stitch-In-The-Ditch

Stitch a running stitch ‘in the ditch’ along the seams between two blocks or between patches within a block.

Outline Quilting

Quilt approx 1/4” inside or outside the patches of the quilt. Avoids the seam allowance so you don’t have so many layers to work through.

Quilt Patterns

More intricate designs can be quilted by marking the design on the quilt with a suitable marker. The designs can be drawn free-hand or using ready-made stencils.

Free-Motion Machine Quilting

Meandering lines of quilting worked randomly or in a freehand but unmarked design. Needs a darning foot, lowered feed-dogs, tension adjustments and a bit of practice!

Long-Arm Quilting

Very specialised option. Long-Arm quilting machines cost thousands of £s.

Professional Long-Arm Quilters will offer a service to Quilt your quilt in a design of your choice.
