Jelly Rolls and Layer Cakes

Yes - I know - it sounds more like food than patchwork!

Fabric manufacturer Moda started the ball rolling with their Jelly Rolls; for the non-US reader a 'Jelly Roll' is the equivalent of an English 'Swiss Roll' and when you see the packs of fabric strips all rolled up, you can see where the name came from.

Jelly Roll

A Jelly Roll is a set of 2½" strips, usually 40 strips in one roll, all from the same fabric collection, so you instantly get a group of fabrics which will co-ordinate with each other. The strips are cut from selvedge to selvedge, making them just over 40" long - so you get the equivalent of about 2.5 metres of fabric in each roll.

Layer Cake

A Layer Cake is made from 40  x 10" squares, all from the same fabric collection; another way to get a co-ordinated group of fabrics; and again, you get the equivalent of about 2.5 metres of fabric in each 'cake'.
